Theo Jansen makes huge, wind-driven Strandbeesten (beach animals) out of PVC. In these works of art, he combines technology and creativity. He optimised the legs of the Strandbeesten using an evolutionary algorithm that he has written himself in as early as 1990, on his Atari computer. Yet the mechanics remain fascinatingly low-tech. In his webshop, Jansen sells miniatures of the Strandbeesten. They arrive as a kit of parts with a manual. Once constructed, Jamal painted his miniature to emphasize the machine-likeness.
