Architecture turns physical at the Lehrstuhl für Plastik of Aachen University of Technology. To chisel, gouge and sand a wooden bowl, students spend hours in the cold of an outdoor workshop. Thus, in the subject Bildnerische Gestaltung, they fathom the material, gain a sense of detail, and learn to trust a process. Preliminary studies gave a sense of what was at all possible. But the fate of preliminary studies in clay is that they fall to pieces. Quite interestingly, it proves difficult to clay a new preliminary study afterwards: this replica looks more like the final result. Philosophers like ponder simulacra for a reason.
