If our sense of time were derived from the speed at which tar hardens and softens, the world would look very different. But no, we don't usually think beyond one human life and specifically our own. This slab of tar was lying on the beach, hence the bits of shell and stone sunk into it. Tar is pollution, but beautiful pollution. At the same time, tar sands are a natural phenomenon.
