construction update first self-sufficient bus station in the netherlands

The construction of the new bus station in Tilburg is rapidly progressing. After intensive work on the site and on the layout of the Spoorlaan and bus platforms, the installation of the steel structure of the roof started by the end of 2018. With a meticulous engineering and extensive prefabrication, assembly is efficient and fast. The completion, test phase and taking into use are planned for March.

The new bus station Tilburg is part of the large-scale revitalization of the public transportation hub Tilburg. It will be equipped with a modern roof where travelers can wait for their bus dry and comfortably. A unique feature is that the required energy for the lighting, the pavilion and the information boards is supplied by the solar panels on the canopy, thus rendering the project the first self-sufficient bus station in The Netherlands.

The triangular-shaped roof is 165 meters long, while its widest section measures 23 meters. The generous platform on all sides, holds a concrete plinth that forms the transition between the pavement and a green interior zone at the heart of the construction. The entire plinth functions as a seating element, with 14 steel benches of 2.40 meters each, that have integrated heating. The lighting of the platform is incorporated in the awning, evenly distributed and covered at the bottom with translucent ETFE over the full width of the awning. The columns include provisions such as rainwater drainage, but also all data and electricity cabling. The installation-technical infrastructure is also prepared for the rapid charge of electric buses in the near future. The sustainable nature of the design is reflected in the robust and low-maintenance design as well. The tight detailing and a minimum of corners and edges avoid pollution. The cable tray is covered with tread plate and also serves as a walkway for maintenance personnel, who can thus easily clean or replace lighting for expample.
