Collectiecentrum Nederland op shortlist Archdaily voor ‘best industrial architecture'

chris langemeijer

The Netherlands Collection Centre is on Archdaily's list for 'best industrial architecture'. CCNL is an ingenious, sustainable depot of four leading Dutch museums and is known as 'the physical memory of the Netherlands'. Whether it is one of the best five projects of 2021 will be decided by a worldwide audience. Voting is open until 9 February at noon.

Rijksmuseum
The 675,000 pieces of art and heritage that you do not see in the Rijksmuseum, Nederlands Openluchtmuseum, Paleis Het Loo and the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed are stored in the Netherlands Collection Centre (CCNL) in the woods near Amersfoort. It is a unique building in many ways. Not only because of the cooperation between these four leading museums, which share knowledge and expertise, but also because of the research and restoration rooms. The building is also one of the most sustainable in the Netherlands.

perfect environment
The fact that the building has been awarded the highest achievable BREEAM Outstanding design certificate is not even the most special part about this building. The ingenious solutions and functional choices for the complex issue of an art depot make this a perfect building. Because this environment has to be perfect.
That is why the building itself is slightly recessed. The interior space is located in a highly insulated building envelope, but standing on an uninsulated floor that is in direct contact with the ground below. As a result, little regulation is required to ensure a good and stable indoor climate.

less technology, less risk
Savings are made on installations and equipment. Not only from a sustainability point of view, technology can also pose a risk. For example, equipment can break down, which directly endangers the indoor climate and therefore art. To prevent short circuits, for example, the doors in the depots are manual instead of electric. For the same reason, smoke detectors are not located in the depots themselves but outside, connected to the air supply from the depots. And to protect the art and the internal transport against vibrations, the entire building is barrier-free and all the scaffolding rails are embedded in the screed.

pleasant working environment
CCNL is experienced by its employees as a very pleasant working environment. The design is by cepezed and cepezedinterieur, in close cooperation with ABT for the constructions, Valstar Simonis for the installations and Peutz for the building physics and sustainability.
