town hall woerden acquires nomination sustainable building awards

The cepezed and cepezedinterior-designed Woerden town hall brought the city a nomination for the Circular Ring, the award for the most sustainable client and part of the Dutch Sustainable Building Awards. The large-scale renovation project not only distinguishes itself by its sustainability, but also by its budget neutrality!

The budget neutrality stems, among other things, from the reduction of the overall floor area and the various sustainability measures, which are not only environmentally friendly but also greatly save on energy costs. Including the finance charges for the renovation, the total operating costs of the old and renovated city hall are now the same. “The municipality has been very creative with their budget; the operational expenses were not allowed to grow,” mentions the jury report. To continue that exactly this is often the biggest quest. “Therein, this project is unique and an example for other municipalities. Woerden has dared to renovate its own housing in a special, sustainable way.”

The old town hall had an energy label G and the municipality minimally required an A+ label after renovation. Ultimately however, the renovated building acquired the A+++ label, the second highest achievable. For this, cepezed provided it with a strongly insulating façade, an aquifer thermal energy storage and solar panels, among other things. The new town hall has also been transformed from dark and closed to transparent and full of daylight, while it no longer has a gas connection.

The winners will be announced on February 6th, 2020 during the Sustainably Built Congress in Assen. As one of the six nominees for the awards, the municipality also has a chance to win the public choice award. Last year, cepezed received this award for the circular pavilion The Green House in Utrecht. More info through the website of Sustainably Built.
