new zest for iconic tinbergen building

cepezed

The Tinbergen Building is located on campus Woudestein. cepezed made a resilient renovation design for this icon of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The contractor is Berghege Heerkens bouwgroep.

milestone
Ellen van Schoten, vice president of the Executive Board, is happy and proud that the renovation of Tinbergen Building can finally start, she said on 11 July. "It is a milestone in the further modernisation and sustainability of our campus. In the coming years, Berghege Heerkens bouwgroep will be hard at work, so that students and staff can benefit from the improved teaching and research facilities in the decades to come."

experienced
Berghege Heerkens bouwgroep is delighted to have been selected for this prestigious project, says director Dennis Krol. "The Berghege Heerkens construction group combines years of experience in the construction sector with extensive knowledge of sustainable renovations. During our work, we keep inconvenience to a minimum; both for the students and staff and for the flora and fauna in the area."

monument
The renovation of Tinbergen Building, a 1968 municipal monument, is urgent. The technical installations are outdated and the layout of the building no longer matches the modern requirements for education and research. It currently consists largely of smaller office spaces, while there is a need for spaces that can be used flexibly. cepezed restores the functional logic of the building and makes its brutalist characteristics visible again.

glass structure
Tinbergen Building's current facilities will be replaced by new, high-quality study and work spaces. Students, researchers and lecturers will soon have the latest audiovisual equipment. Plenty of plants and trees, both indoors and outdoors, provide a stimulating and healthy working environment. A glass structure on top of the building provides space for a restaurant, with views of Rotterdam, and there are rooms for executive programmes, workshops and master classes, which were urgently needed at Woudestein Campus.

sustainable
Like many other universities, Erasmus University Rotterdam has an ambitious sustainability programme. Renovating Tinbergen Building contributes to this. Just by preserving the building, but also by improved roof and floor insulation, energy-efficient lift installations and solar panels on the roof. It has been agreed with the contractor that materials removed during the renovation will be reused as much as possible. Completion is scheduled for mid-2027.
