Thursday February 14th, cepezed partner and architect Paddy Sieuwerts was one of four speakers at the Architectenweb network event on modular housing construction. At the Amsterdam location of meeting place Broeinest, Sieuwerts shared cepezed’s vision on and approach of this theme.
The Netherlands suffer from housing shortage and as a consequence sharply increased house prices. Modular housing can contribute to solutions for these matters; building with prefabricated, modular elements can considerably speed up the process. Because these elements are also easily reusable, modular construction also offers good opportunities for more circularity in housing construction.
Sieuwerts talked about the principles and methods that cepezed advocates and applies in the field of modular construction. The most important feature of this is the elaboration of a kit of parts with a focus on the connections between the different elements. This renders building fast and uncomplicated and continuously offers a high degree of flexibility in both process and use. cepezed already used a kit of parts for its 1982 Heiwo house, which became a true classic in modular housing.
In housing and other projects that cepezed is currently working on, such as ‘t Eemgoed in the Oosterwold development near Almere, the approach is still on topic. During the transformation into conference centre and hotel of the historic arsenal in Delft, the existing state remains completely intact; the modern hotel rooms including sanitary units are designed as fully modular additions that can be easily changed or removed later on.
